Community Engagement Manager with the Urban Peace Institute (UPI)

Job Title: Community Engagement Manager Full Time Position - Exempt

The Urban Peace Institute (UPI) is seeking a highly qualified Community Engagement Manager to support our successful place-based initiatives and community engagement strategies, which include directing leadership development trainings, school safety collaboratives, maintaining partnerships with community organizations and facilitating neighborhood-level stakeholder groups in South Los Angeles. This Senior Management level position will be supervised by the Executive Director. Working with UPI team members, the Community Engagement Manager will be responsible for the development and implementation of place-based strategies, as well as building and maintaining strategic partnerships and initiatives.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • ManagestheimplementationofcommunityengagementinitiativesinSouthLosAngeles neighborhoods, and beyond, including program development, budget and contract management, staff supervision, strategic partnership development, and community engagement. Provide leadership and support to staff executing program deliverables and ensure the highest quality;
  • Oversees and manages community engagement for place-based initiatives, including improving community and school safety, community policing, neighborhood-level leadership development, community research, and coordination of collaborative stakeholder tables in South Los Angeles;
  • Works in alignment with organization-wide initiatives to strengthen overall UPI agenda;
  • Researchesandintegratesbestpracticesintoprogramworksuchassafepassages,leadership, community-based campaigns, and violence prevention;
  • Demonstrates appropriate organizational leadership;
  • Develops and maintains county-wide networks and partnerships with multiple sectors involved in community and public safety efforts;
  • Tracks national, state and local developments in policy forums including legislative activity around UPI issues;
  • Directlysuperviseassignedprogramstaff;
  • Works with Executive Director and Senior Team on fundraising, strategic planning, staff management and contract development;
  • Participates in organization-wide planning, development, and communication activities as needed and ensures adherence to organization-wide goals and policies within the program area;
  • Conducts presentations, briefings, and workshops to a broad array of stakeholders and partners; o Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

  • 4+ years experience in senior program management, community organizing/engagement, staff supervision and partnership management required;
  • Master’s degree in relevant field of study including public policy, criminology, sociology, social work, public health and others or BA with equivalent experience is required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and a disposition to work in an organization focused on civil rights and equity;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse people across the spectrum of socio-economic status, race, ethnicity and gender orientation; Bilingual Spanish preferred;
  • Substantivebackgroundinpublicsafety,violenceprevention,and/orcommunityorganizingis required. Successful candidates will have high level of comfort and experience with two or more of these areas. Experience working specifically on issues of gang violence, violence prevention and/or the needs of the formerly incarcerated is a plus;
  • Strongfamiliaritywithdatafromavarietyofsources,includingeconomicdevelopmentorpublic health studies, census reports, law enforcement agencies, nonprofit database systems, etc.;
  • Direct experience working on program development, community engagement, staff management, and report-writing is required.;
  • Excellentinterpersonalskillsandtheprovenabilitytoworkwithcommunitiesofcolor;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, i.e. facilitation, outreach, report writing, and message delivery;
  • Flexibilitytoadjustandcontributetocontinuallyevolvingworksituationandchangingpriorities; o Highcomputerproficiencyandcomfortamust;

Annual Salary: DOE. Includes health, dental and vision benefits. Parking is also included.

Organization Mission & History:

UPI is a leading nonprofit in the field of community safety, just policing, and systems reform to end community and gang violence. For nearly two decades, UPI has worked to develop and implement innovative solutions to address community violence and engage in ground-level system reform. This work began as a program of Advancement Project, and beginning in 2015, as an independent organization fiscally sponsored by Community Partners. UPI’s mission is to create thriving communities by implementing solutions to reduce violence, achieve safety, and improve health.

Since 2011, UPI has led regional safety efforts in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts through an initiative known as the Community Safety Partnership. These efforts include training law enforcement on effective community based policing practices, leading a Latino Leadership Institute to develop residents’ capacity to guide safety strategies, and convening diverse stakeholders to implement violence reduction strategies. UPI’s leadership of the Community Safety Partnership has resulted in significant success. Violent crime in Watts has decreased by more than 70% in four housing developments, youth arrests were cut in half, and after three years of implementation, crime plummeted by 50% in three of the housing developments.
