Tailored Guidance for Cities and Counties

Through collaboration with local and national groups, Prevention Institute (PI) has directly shaped how local, state and national coalitions, government entities, and philanthropy have approached the issue of violence and improved prevention practice broadly. For example:

  • In East San Jose, California, PI is providing backbone support to the Santa Clara County Public Health Department to engage community organizations, government agencies, and multiple sectors, including health care, in creating a plan to reduce and prevent violence and trauma in the community;
  • In Contra Costa County, PI is working with the Alliance to End Abuse and its multisector Core Project Team to build shared understanding of and commitment to prevention of multiple forms of interpersonal violence through the development of a County Interpersonal Violence Prevention Blueprint
  • In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, PI worked with the Health Department on a Blueprint for Peace to reduce the incidence of interpersonal and structural violence, and to promote community safety and resilience;
  • In Kansas City, Missouri, PI developed multi-sector strategies with the Violence-Free Kansas City Committee (VFKCC) in 2015, and is now working with the Health Department and VFKCC to build this work into a comprehensive master plan for community safety and resilience across the city;
  • In Los Angeles County, California, on behalf of the LA County Department of Public Health, PI developed recommendations for a proposed LA County Office of Violence Prevention through listening sessions with community-based organizations and faith-based groups, and interviews with subject matter experts, including service providers and survivors of multiple forms of violence;
  • PI facilitated the development of Marin County, California’s strategic plan to prevent Intimate Partner Violence;
  • PI advised the New Orleans Health Department on the prevention elements of the NOLA for Life murder reduction strategy;
  • In California, home to PI’s headquarters, Managing Director Rachel Davis serves as a long-time adviser to the Alameda County Violence Prevention Initiative and chaired the Advisory Board for California’s 13-City Gang Prevention Network.

Sample city- and county-wide strategic plans can be found here.

Through research, training and consultation, Prevention Institute also builds tools and supports capacity-building among violence prevention practitioners. For example:

  • For more than 10 years, PI has partnered with the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault to host the national PreventConnect web conference series to advance primary prevention of sexual and domestic violence;
  • Working in partnership, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and PI published the “Connecting the Dots” report, which outlines the linkages among multiple forms of violence and informed the CDC Division of Violence Prevention’s five-year strategic vision;
  • PI developed a guidance document for CDC’s Essentials for Childhood, a child maltreatment prevention initiative, and Davis serves on the Steering Committee for California’s statewide Essentials for Childhood initiative;
  • PI also provided training and technical assistance for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention’s three signature violence prevention initiatives.

Prevention Institute is also available for keynotes at conferences and short-term consultations and trainings. For example, we have recently worked with Public Health Madison & Dane County, Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs and the Washington State Department of Health on short-term violence prevention consultations and trainings.
